I WISH I KNEW! Sooner- Skincare Edition

At the age of 41, a woman set off on an incredible journey. You see, she had always believed that one’s skin was fixed from birth, you are born with what you have, and there is nothing you can do about it to make it better, smoother, or brighter. For the most part, aside from having dry skin, she didn’t really have a lot of skin issues. But she often longed for a complexion that was smoother, more hydrated, and radiantly bright whenever she saw herself in the mirror. She didn’t believe in skincare products at all. She never believed in going to spas for facials or for skin treatments, either. She thought they were all just a waste of money.

But she wanted to explore. As she delved deeper into this newfound passion for skincare, she couldn’t help but reflect on her past beliefs. With each passing day, she recognized the wisdom she had gained over the years, particularly in understanding the paramount importance of skincare. If she could turn back the hands of time, she’d whisper a word of advice to her younger self: prioritize skincare, for it’s not just a luxury but a cornerstone of self-care, a journey she had only just begun.

Skincare product used in the morning skincare routine. I wish I had known earlier that using a moisturizer with SPF or SPF alone in the morning is really necessary. It’s no secret that using SPF can help prevent sunburns, which can lead to skin cancer. Unfortunately, in my twenties, I was unaware that a good SPF had a significant benefit: it protects my skin from dangerous UV rays that produce dark spots, fine lines, and wrinkles. With the simple step of applying SPF every morning, we may assist our skin reverse the effects of aging by reducing the appearance of dark spots, enhancing skin texture, and increasing brightness. Even if you’re staying inside all day or it’s raining and cloudy outdoors, SPF  is a non-negotiable skincare step in my morning skincare routine.

A must-have skincare product for your nightly routine. Before I understood anything about skincare, I would hunt for a nightly cream or lotion to apply after washing my face. I’m glad I did because I was unknowingly receiving a product that most likely contained retinol. Retinols and retinoids (sometimes called Vitamin A) are important components for increasing cell turnover. “They have years of scientific evidence backing their improvement of wrinkles, pigmentation, and, of course, acne we use SPF in the morning to protect our skin, and we should also use retinol and retinoids at night to heal it.

High-priced products

High price doesn’t always equal high quality. I used to think this way in my 20s and 30s simply for one reason: I didn’t know anything about the ingredients and what to look for in skincare products. In 20s, we look for specific brands, which  still do, because I trusted some of them more than others. There is nothing wrong with being a fan of a certain skincare brand. When it comes to animal testing, and choosing natural or organic skincare ingredients, we tend to have different opinions, and it’s totally fine. However, when we choose skincare products based on their ingredients, we can find amazing products that are in fact very affordable. Also, there are plenty of pricey products that are clearly overpriced and have only basic ingredients.

Lastly, reflecting on her past beliefs, she realized the wisdom she had gained over the years, particularly in understanding the importance of skincare. If given the chance, she would advise her younger self to prioritize skincare, recognizing it as a crucial aspect of self-care.
